"So what is this about Jean?" asked Qurjot as he stood around the pool table with his arms folded. Not only had he been awoken from a nap, but it wasn't even his shift; especially after he had just pulled a double in trying to get the Magellan's engines back up and running.
"I have no idea, all I know was that I was given an order and I executed that order, you seem overly grumpy today Qurjot," replied Jean with a slight laugh, along with a few other engineers who knew Qurjot as long as she had.
"Wouldn't you be grumpy if you pulled two back to back doubles," he said as he rubbed the corner of his eyes. it had been slightly stressful on the senior engineering officers. They had work hard and worked long hours with the Senior Staff to help and try and finish the repairs. Chief McCall walked over and joined the rest of the crew, he had been eating lunch apparently as he was wearing a piece of it on his uniform. "Is it a custom for Humans to wear their food or is it just you?" asked Iria as she raised her eyebrow and scanned over his uniform.
"Again?" he replied as he looked down at the stain of tomato sauce on his uniform coat. "I swear this is the third time this week," he said in a frustrated tone.
"A Fifth time is more accurate," replied Iria with a slight laugh. At that moment Will walked through the doors of main engineering with a couple of data PADDS in his hand. "If Iria is laughing that must mean that McCall brought his lunch with him again," Will said as the room erupted into slight laughs.
"So what's meaning of waking us up, well half of us up at least," came Qurjot's response.
"I didn't wake you up, Jean woke you up; and if you have a complaint about that please complain to her. As she is the only one who will put up with negative comments, from you Qurjot," replied Will as he moved towards the head of the pool table.
"Don't count on that Qurjot," replied Jean as she give him a stern look that could crack glass. The majority of the senior engineering staff that was now on the Magellan had transferred over from the Churchill. One of the good things about that was the extensive working chemistry they've developed over the years; the bad thing about it was well the jokes that they told because they knew each other.
"Whats going on is that we've got to get the Magellan moving again, while we sit here we are in danger of being attacked. The last time I checked the Magellan wasn't the most maneuverable ship in the fleet," he said as he looked at his officers.
"Well the warp engines have been repaired what is holding us here?" asked Brandon as he had that look of concern in his eyes.
"Gravimetric distortions, did you not read the report that was sent out before we left Starbase?" Will asked with a puzzled look.
"I just assumed sir that the damage to the nacelle was due to just one," came Brandon's response.
"Since the destruction of DS7 we have multiple gravimetric distortions and they are spread out. Our job is to get close enough to the station to figure out what happened, doing so requires us to endure gravimetric distortions. We do not know how much stronger these distortions are going to be the closer we get to the wreckage " replied Will as he tapped a few buttons on the panel in front of him and pulled up the simulation that he just ran earlier for Commander T'Prynn.
"As you know the Magellan's size makes traversing these gravimetric distortions quite impossible. If we were a Nova or Defiant class we could just simply navigate around them, however with the Magellan's size that isn't possible. So we need to locate them, and then try and neutralize the effects on the Magellan as much as possible," replied Will as he looked at each of his staff officers.
"What you are viewing here is something I've come up with. Back in the 20th and 21st Centuries, military forces used underwater ships called Submarines. These submarines used a technique called SONAR to locate objects underwater. A sound wave would be emitted from the bow of the ship; while the wave traveled underwater. If it came in contact with another vessel or object it would bounce back and report the location of said object," he said as he gave a brief pause. He wanted to make sure that the brief history lesson sank in before he continued.
"The principal in the simulation will be the same; however we must convert the deflector dish to emit a series of subspace frequency waves in the hopes that it will show us the exact locations of the distortions," he said as the simulation replayed it's self.
"Sir, the deflector dish wasn't created for that situation," replied Brandon as he moved in closer watching the simulation.
"True, however the deflector dish does move objects out of the ship's path while we are traveling at warp. The deflector dish can be transformed into a long range communications array if need be; how long it is going to take I am not sure. However I need options as to how we can achieve this. Also we need to think of a way to ease the effects of the distortions should the Magellan come into contact with one."
Before anyone could respond, the ships internal comm array activated and a familiar voice echoed through the engineering bay. "=/\=Bridge to Engineering," the voice of the Vulcan XO called.
"Engineering here Commander," replied Will as he waited attentively for T'Prynn's response.
"=/\=The Captain requires your countermeasure for the distortions active as soon as possible. Can you specify an ETA on its completion?" the Vulcan queried.
It was interesting that she would ask that very question, right as they themselves were wondering that. He couldn't just not give her an answer but he gave a slightly hesitant response. "We can have the modifications for the dish ready in a couple of days," he said as he awaited her response.
"=/\=Two days Commander, not a second more. T'Prynn out," the Vulcan told bluntly before her voice disappeared and the comm channel closed.
"Well we've got our time frame," replied Will as he looked at the rest of his engineering team. "Since we have two days to work with this, I want you all to bring the Junior officers up to speed on this one as well. I want every shift working on this, and if that means that I've got to assign a Senior officer to every shift to accomplish this then so be it," he said as he placed both hands on the engineers pool; and looked into each and everyone of their faces.
Will worked his hands over the controls and pulled up the duty roster for the next week. "Jean I am going to assign you to main engineering for both the beta and gamma shifts. Qurjot your going to be on the bridge during Beta shift and then you'll be in main engineering during Delta shift. Ira will be on the bridge during delta shift and main engineering with me during Alpha shift. Brandon, I am going to need you on the bridge during Gamma shift but working with Jean in main engineering on Beta shift," he said as he put the changes in the duty roster into the system.
"This is the rotation just for the next two days people, and I want you to pull in the Junior officers and the Non-Commissioned officers as well. Don't over whelm them with too much detail, but let's try and focus on one thing at a time," Will said as he paused and allowed what he said to settle in. "Alright everyone let's get to work."
